Be the Change . . .

Members J. Kim Wright and Jennifer Foster have put together another treat in Asheville, a monthly lunch meeting on "Peacemaking and the Law." Here's an excerpt quoting their first speaker (on Sept. 5):

"The time has clearly come for lawyers to begin to emphasize their role . . . as conciliators, and peacemakers--as counselors for what is right, not merely advocates for what is legally possible. Lawyers need to remind themselves that peacemaking and conflict healing are first obligations of our profession."

N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice James G. Exum

Greetings Members and Friends,

Save the Date: May 15-18, 2008.

The theme of the 2008 IAHL Conference is

Authentic Lawyering: Practicing from the Heart.

If that resonates with you, you're in good company. At our 2004 conference, when asked how he thought up collaborative law, Stu Webb said, "I was just looking for a way to practice law and be myself."

Imagine what we can do if we each find ways to become more authentic, happy professionals at work.

Providing the tools to do that is the intent we've set for the next conference, so make plans to join us in the Detroit area May 15-18.

  • Plans for the 2008 Conference
  • Our 2008 retreat will be at The Retreat Center in Plymouth, Michigan, a short ride from the Detroit airport. A 170-acre retreat facility—with six gardens—the center is run by the Archdiocese of Detroit. Here are some points from Tim on what's in the works so far.

    • The theme for the conference is heart- based lawyering. For those who relate to chakras, the focus is on the energy of the fourth chakra.
    • We hope to have Ward Powers as a keynote speaker (he gets rave reviews). A lawyer, he created and produced One the Movie, a film about the concept of oneness.
    • Lorraine Webber, who is the head of the Detroit Metro Bar Association and a shaman will open the conference and lead at least one ritual. To read out more on Lorraine, visit her website at www.earthwalk.org.
    • Martha Burkett is helping put the conference together. She is the acting director of the Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program in Michigan. She was involved in putting together the Happy Healthy Lawyer conference in Ann Arbor last spring.
    • We hope to feature a drumming circle one evening.
If you have any ideas, thoughts or suggestions, or if you want to contribute in any way, please let Tim know.

  • Impressions from the Asheville Conference
  • At right, Kedar Brown, leading Native American fire ceremony at Asheville conference.

Our conference last May, on Empowerment, was . . . well, here are some excerpts from the comments on our listserv.

    • I learned tons, discovered I am not alone as a holistic lawyer, made new and deeper friendships, and had a fabulous time ranging from silent meditation to rolling-on-the-floor laughter
    • Thanks to everyone for the incredible conference in Asheville. I sit a different person behind my desk this afternoon—more whole, much more secure in my authentic self.
    • I have never been with so many people that all "got it" and felt so connected . . . I drove home in a state of bliss (15-hour ride).
    • I (Kedar) have much gratitude for the vision you are dreaming into this world through the work that you are doing.
    • Magic: shared visioning, observing my thoughts coming out of someone else's mouth, Kedar's words spoken as if he had been present with us for the entire time, the message "I am powerful" coming to me not once, but in the same exact words three times.
Read J. Kim's description of the connectedness at the conference, quoted in Tim's column.

  • Be the Change You Want to See
  • IAHL board member Fran Brochstein, a family lawyer in Houston, posted this to the listserv:

"I came home from Asheville so motivated that I took the giant step of announcing myself as a holistic lawyer on my emails, stationery, website, etc. My web guy, who was devastated by his parent's divorce, embraced my holistic ideas and did the work— for free. I expected some negative remarks, but so far, there've been none."

  • I've added a new feature this newsletter, entitled "Be the Change You Want to See." Send me blurbs on what you're doing to incorporate holistic principles into your practice and life. We all know, that's not necessarily easy— and the steps you take can encourage the rest of us.

Also, I'm looking for quotes and other gems that inspire you. For instance, I just discovered this one, which has helped when I'm stuck or discouraged:

Free your mind to continually move forward: this allows solutions to come into view.
